Things to do in Hawaii Honeymoon

Below our list of things to do in hawaii honeymoon with information on the main islands of Oahua and Maui.

Sunset cruise
There is nothing more relaxing then cruising about on a yacht as the sun sets over the water in Hawaii. Enjoy a few Mai Thais, some chilled tunes and the beautiful trade winds as your crew hoist the sails and keep you topped up and laughing. We enjoyed cruises with both Trilogy (Maui) and Maitai catamaran (Oahu) and highly recommend both for value and service.

Read our Maui Trilogy cruise review and Oahu Maitai cruise review.

Road to Hana
Jump on one of the daily organised tours or hire your own car to take a road trip of the picturesque Road to Hana. This 64-mile-long route contains around 600 bends and 54 bridges along its scenic drive. Along the way, check out the unique black and green sand beaches, take a dip in a waterfall or two and enjoy the cliff top lookouts.

Pearl Harbor

Most people will know Oahu for its historic war site, Pearl Harbour. This museum and memorial includes four key sites: the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Memorial and park, Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum. For more information see the official Pearl Harbor site.

Read our Pearl Harbor review for tips and tricks.

College Football

The tailgate parties before the game, the marching bands, the cheerleaders and baton twirlers, the kiss cam and of course the game itself. No trip to America is complete without taking in a football (NFL) game. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors are the local college football team and promise an action-packed afternoon at Aloha Stadium. Be sure to grab a hot dog (they sell out quick) and arrive well before the game to wander amongst the tailgate parties in the car park (an American institution in themselves), watch the marching bands warm up, chill with some live music and enjoy a beer or two before the game.

Shark snorkel

Want an adrenaline rush that is one of the more unique experiences in the world? Head into

the deep to snorkel with some of the most feared predators of the ocean. No cages, just you, a pair of flippers and your camera stands between you and the dozens of sharks swirling below. We headed out of on the pelagic shark program with One Ocean Diving. Learn about shark behaviour and conservation before entering the water

to see these amazing creatures up close and personal.
Read our Once Ocean Diving Pelagic Shark Program review.

Fishing
Full and half day fishing charters can be accessed from most habors in Hawaii, but for those chasing the big one, you can’t go past Kona on the Big Island. It’s host to Hawaii’s biggest fishing competition and a great spot to hook a big game fish such as marlin, mahi mahi, wahoo and ahi tuna.

Snorkelling
Make sure you have a snorkel and fins on your packing list (or grab one cheap at Walmart) so you can take every opportunity to see the underwater world below the surface of those azure blue waters. Paddle in straight off any beach area including the sheltered Hanauma or Turtle Bays or jump on a boat tour to places like Molokini Crater and Turtle Town.

Read our Pride of Maui Molokini and Turtle Town snorkel tour review.

Luau
A visit to one of Hawaii’s luaus for a traditional Hawaiian party and feast is a must do for most visitors to Hawaii. While many Luaus are now seen as a bit commercialised for tourists, there are still a number of good ones around and they certainly provide a fun night out. We enjoyed the Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency, Maui which features dances from islands all over Polynesia and also included a trafitional imu ceremony, an all you can eat buffet of mouth-watering food such as Kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, ahi poke and huli huli chicken, a dessert buffet and open bar with beer, wine, cocktails and juices.

Water sports

Well known as a popular surfing destination, no trip to Hawaii would be complete without grabbing a long board to hang ten as you catch some waves. Calm swells like those that are found at Waikiki are also great for some stand up paddleboarding, aqua biking or snorkelling straight off the beach. Grabbing a board or snorkel is a great way to spot turtles as you cruise around the crystal-clear waters. Boards and other gear can be hired from most hotels, but for cheaper options head to one of the many vendors along the beach strip.

Volcano tour

Turn up the heat and take a tour, trek or flight over one of Hawaii’s volcanos. With 3 active volcanos, as well as dormant ones that can be explored on foot, the island of Hawaii is one of the few places in the world where you can get up close to these natural phenomena.

Kualoa Ranch
From picturesque horse rides to adventurous ATVs and zip lining, Kualoa Ranch is an awesome day out for any visitor to Oahu. Take in the stunning mountains of the 4000-acre working ranch as you learn about the dozens of movies filmed within its valleys such as Jurassic Park and Godzilla.

Held at the stadium on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, this is the state’s biggest open-air flea market and features over 400 stands, selling everything from clothing to souvenirs and snacks. Entry is $1pp. Check current operation dates and times before you go in case there is a football match scheduled that week.

Shopping

Bring a spare suitcase and shop til you drop at the Waikele Premium Outlets and Ala Moana Centre. The outlets feature more than 50 brand name stores, while Ala Moana features almost 300 stores and 80 dining options. You will also find smaller outlets on the other islands and for high end fashion should check our Luxury Row on Kalakaua Ave and the duty-free prices at DFS T Galleria.

On the way, be sure to check out the Dole Plantation, a historic pineapple plantation where you can enjoy Dole Whip, a delicious pineapple flavoured soft serve. Manali landscapeA Manali Honeymoon Trip may be perfect for you and your partner if you are looking for a picturesque affordable location where you can immerse yourself in the natural surrounds. Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous region in North India. The literal meaning of the place is ‘Land of Snow’, therefore the name of the state itself conjures a beautiful image in mind. Himachal is home to a number of valleys, including the famous honeymoon destination, Manali.

Manali, located near the Kullu Valley, is one of the most scenic valleys in Himachal. Since the valley is located in a cold region, the temperatures fall as low as -15°C in the winter, but the summer season is pleasantly warm. Despite the somewhat extreme weather conditions, Manali does not fail to attract thousands of tourists every year. Many people call it a “must-see” holiday destination. In the holiday season, the valley is always bustling with people visiting from both within the country and abroad. The breathtaking beauty of the place plays a great role in attracting such a large crowd. Manali is a beautiful hill station with an aura of serenity surrounding it due to the presence of forests as green as the waters that flow in the rivers surrounding the valley. It boasts magnificent temples, glorious waterfalls, and a general sense of calmness due to the abundance of natural beauty present in the area.

Things to do in Manali

The picturesque sights in Manali provide a great opportunity for people who are on their honeymoon to connect with their partners. If you do not feel up to making a great effort, you can just stay in your hotel, sit with your partner on the balcony, and look out over the snowy mountains. The Himalayan Adventure Caravan also provides an excellent adventurous experience for tourists. The package can be customized according to the activities that you wish to take part in. the caravan offers white-water rafting, mountain biking, trekking through the mountains, and jeep safaris. The presence of the Beas River in the vicinity of Manali makes it possible for tourists to participate in white-water rafting.

The temple celebrates the goddess Hadimba Devi. It boasts a great visual display of miniature versions of the goddess and her attendants. Manali YakSomething more romantic?

If you have a little longer

Since there is a long list of activities to participate in and places you can visit, it would be best to extend your honeymoon to at least 10 days. This will give you the opportunity to make sure you can maximise the fun. One of the best things to do if you are staying for a longer time is exploring Mall Road. It is impossible to experience it fully in a short amount of time. Therefore, you should dedicate a few days from your stay to experiencing the crowded streets full of souvenir shops and eateries situated on Mall Road. The street also offers a scenic view of the surrounding trees.

Something different for honeymoon night 1

The first day of your honeymoon should be focused on letting yourself and your spouse get accustomed to the atmosphere of the new place. The many places that you can visit in Manali have been mentioned before. You could pick any one place which you think would be best for helping you connect with your soulmate, and focus on that. The first day should not be as tiring so that you do not tire yourselves out right at the start of your honeymoon. You should reserve the first night for your spouse. The ideal end to your day would be a romantic, preferably candlelight, dinner in one of the fancy restaurants of Manali, such as Il Forno or Café 1947.

MANALI TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKS

Manali house

The months between October and June are said to be the perfect times for visiting Manali because the monsoon is usually very wet and you might not be able to enjoy your honeymoon to the fullest with half the valley off-limits. The winter months will make it necessary for you to dress warm and stay safe from the cold winds. Summer, however, gives visitors a great opportunity to explore the outdoors.

Also, while Manali is accessible via multiple means of transportation, it is preferable to take land transport. Air travel around the region is discouraged since the weather conditions are not travel-friendly. Road-trips are high on the list of travel recommendations since they give travelers a chance to appreciate the scenic beauty all the way to Manali.

Regarding the atmosphere, New Manali should be your choice of stay if you wish to be part of the hustle and bustle of the valley life. However, for a more peaceful experience where you enjoy the company of your spouse, it is recommended to arrange for accommodation in Old Manali.

If you choose bus transport – some buses don’t have toilets onboard and instead make semi regular stops so don’t drink too much water!!

 IS MANALI SAFE?

Petty crime throughout the area – particularly for theft is common so be careful particularly if travelling by train. Some areas of India have increased reports of sexual assault, and some areas have areas of anti-government Naxalite groups operating. Scamming throughout the area is also common targeting the tourist areas.

As Manali is in the Northern more remote areas of India, it is high recommended to consult the link below for ares with current travel warnings. Some of the Northernmost areas of India commonly have advice to limit travel to that area. For the latest travel assessments and warnings, take a look at the India page for the US passport and International travel website for the latest travel warnings and information for Manali.

Goa Honeymoon

Goa india sunsetA Goa Honeymoon may be exactly what you are looking for if you are chasing a honeymoon spot close to nature, hassle free from crowd and traffic with lots of romantic space that is also wallet-friendly.

Goa is situated along the western coast of India, which is also known as the Kongan coast. This makes Goa famous for its beaches. There are a lot of small islands – both marine and estuarine, that offer a lot of opportunities for tourists to have a great time. Goa is one of the top most visited tourist spots of India – the coastal state fills the day and night with fun, peace and happiness. Goa’s serene beaches offer space for couples to spend romantic time together. As a couple, you can take a dip at the sea, take a trip to do a jungle safari and a plenty more.

Things to do in Goa

Below a list of romantic, cultural, adventurous and relaxing activities to keep yourselves amused on the trip to Goa.

Netravali

Surprise your partner with a trip to a few less trodden trails of Goa. One such place is Netravali. It is a village in south Goa, under heavy influence of Portuguese atmosphere. The village is 80 km from the capital city Panaji. It is worth spending a day at Netravali.

On the way to Netravali, you can see scenic beauty of green forests and wild species. After entering the village, the backdrop changes to Portuguese style residences that will take you a few centuries back on a time machine.

Plan your first stop at the bubbling Netravali lake. Also known as “Budbud Tali” in Kongani language, this lake is a scientific marvel. It looks more like a pond with a few steps leading to it. The surface of the water keeps forming concentric circles with bubbles. Ask your partner to clap her/his hands and see the magic! The bubbles move faster with more sound. At this lake, the water responds to acoustic changes. Until now, no clear theory is proved for this water-sound magic. Forget hydraulics and acoustics, just enjoy the beauty of lake and its surroundings.

It is a good idea to head next to Savari Falls a few kilo-meters away. The route is quite tricky, so get directions from locals to reach the falls and enjoy the breath-taking views..

parasailing goaPara-sailing

For any adventure lover, para-sailing is an exciting activity that pumps the adrenaline levels. For a couple, para-sailing is a romance-come-adventure activity which must be on the top of any honeymoon activities list.

A Para-sailing ride takes a person (or two) to the air by fixing one end to a boat and the other part is connected to the para-sailing couple attached to a canopy, which helps them to get an experience of flying on air. This is similar to flying with a parachute, the only difference being connected to a moving boat.

Beaches that offer para-sailing in Goa include Anjuna beach, Calangute beach and Candolim. Prices start from around 8000 INR per person. Para-sailing is operated from October to May. It is advised to take precautions and be informed about the conditions of para-sailing. It is important to know if the operators are well experienced and licenced for the activity. Aquada Fort & Goa State Museum

Being a coastal region with the Arabian sea bounded on the west, Goa faced an invasion by Portuguese. They ruled for around 450 years. In 1961, Goa was annexed to India. It remained as an union territory until 1987. After May 1987, Goa was declared as a separate state of India.

As Goa was under the rule of Portuguese for a long time, it makes the region a mixed area of Portuguese and Indian culture. Heritage Portuguese buildings and museums offer a plethora of information on the glorious history of this state. The architectural style of Portuguese buildings are an awe to see. For a honeymoon trip, it is good to have a dose of informational tours too!

Aguada fort

History is interesting and it is more interesting to learn with a partner! Now, welcome to the Aguada fort – one of the unique structures which stands since 1612.

The fort was built by the Portuguese for a variety of reasons. First, as a defence structure, to safeguard their province. Their main opponents were the Dutch and the neighbour Maratha rulers. Secondly it was used to store goods for supply ships. The fort had a huge water storage facility that was used to re-fill water and other basic needs for the ships that sail across. It also housed a variety of weapons and war materials. A look into the fort and its history is worth a visit for anyone. The fort is located on the Sinquerim beach.

There are many museums in Goa that exhibit cultural artefacts from the Portuguese era. Goa state museum is one such place that offers interesting pieces about the state’s past. This museum also explains the freedom struggle initiated by the locals against Portuguese. The museum is located in the capital city Panaji, and it is easily accessible.

Escape the heat – The best time for visiting Mauritius is during March and April, when it’s not that hot, and there aren’t mosquitoes. Time to avoid is between November and February when it’s really hot. You should also plan a trip to the island’s Botanical Gardens in Pamplemousse, near Port Louis. Its trees will provide a much-needed refresh from the heat.

But, if you take a slow ferry (Anek Lines or Blue Star Ferries), you will need about 8-9 hours. Slow ferries are more comfortable than the fast ones.

Climbing up – The ferry will get you at the bottom of the cliff. To get up, you will have to take the cable car, to walk up the 586 stairs, or to ride a donkey. The most convenient option is cable car, but, if it is windy, it will be closed, and it might get a little too crowded during the summer months.

santorini alleysTraveling around Santorini – The most convenient way to go from town to town is by KTEL public bus. It is cheap and environment-friendly. And if you want to go off the beaten track, you should rent an ATV (a four-wheel bicycle) or a scooter. A standard driver’s license from any country will be enough.

IS SANTORINI SAFE?

Santorini is considered a safe destination with minimal criminal activity. Narrow streets and drunk drivers can pose a safety hazard so be sure to stay safe on the roads and don’t drive after a visit to the wineries. For the latest travel assessments and warnings, take a look at the Greece page for the US passport and International travel website for the latest travel warnings and information for Greece – some of which apply to Santorini.

LOCAL FOOD

French CroissantFrench cuisine is definitely one of the finest. During your honeymoon, don’t hesitate to indulge in all the spectacular wine, French cheese, Champagne, and bread that there is to offer. Almost every Parisian restaurant has the French staple of crispy bread, cheese and a good French wine. There are more than 300 kinds of cheeses made in France, with the most famous being Camembert, Brie and the Roquefort. Make sure that you visit a French fromagerie to get some that’s truly authentic.

If you want to indulge in a typical Parisian meal, try Entrecote Marchand de vin, which involves a juicy steak served with red wine sauce, butter and onions. You may also want to taste a delectable confit de canard – duck confit in English — which is another French favorite. It’s tender, flavorful and some the best comfort food that you can eat in France. Don’t forget the French pastries too! You’ll enjoy their light, crispy flakiness on the outside, and their chewiness on the inside. Try the traditional croissant, or a scrumptious pain au chocolat.

If you are after something a little more unusual, you can find frogs legs (which taste a bit like chicken to me) and escargot cooked in a garlic and butter sauce at some of the local restaurants. Don’t worry though, the escargot are not as slimy as you may be thinking after they’ve been cooked – actually pretty tasty!

LANGUAGE

The main language spoken throughout Paris is French, however there are a lot of people who speak fairly good English – particularly in the service and tourism industry. Before going to Paris I had been told that the locals were not impressed if you tried to interact with them in English – I however found that to be 99% untrue. Some basic French will however be well received throughout Paris and it is highly recommended to learn a few polite phrases.

Useful French phrases

PARIS TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKS

French Macaron

Take a cooking class – There’s no better place to take a cooking class than in Paris. Like mentioned before, Parisian cuisine is some of the finest in the world. You’ll learn something new, whether you end up making croissants, macarons, or steak frite.

Get the Paris Pass – If you have a busy itinerary, you may want to get the Paris Pass. It gives you a lot of free and reduced admissions to museums and sights around the city, which is great if you’re considering taking a long honeymoon. The Paris Museum pass is also a cheaper option, and is good for newly-weds who are focused on visiting as many museums as possible.

Secure your valuables – Pickpockets and thieves who will attempt to create a disturbance then lift your valuables are alive and well in Paris.

See more than the Mona Lisa at the Louvre – When you see the Mona Lisa in person you may be surprised at how tiny it is. Not saying that Di Vinci’s masterpiece isn’t brilliant—but there are loads of bigger and more detailed artworks to see in the Louvre. You can spend over five hours viewing only some of the 380,000 objects and 35,000 displays of art in this world class museum.

IS PARIS SAFE?

Like any major capital city, there are a variety of security threats to look out for such as opportunistic thieves, robbers and drink spikers. Also consider protests are common and should be avoided. Grilled FIshOnce you get to this island, be sure to enjoy the fresh local Polynesian food. The fish here is amazing (choose ocean fish, instead of lagoon fish). And you have to try poisson cru – a delicious dish of tuna marinated in lime and coconut. When it comes to eating out, you can either visit local grocery stores and buy some snacks, or you can visit one of the cafes and restaurants. But, whatever you choose, try not to miss ‘roulottes’ – rolling food trucks which serve grilled fish and fries, as well as kebabs and barbecued meat. These food trucks are a Tahitian tradition.

It would be a good idea to choose resorts with breakfast and dinner included, so you do not have to take a boat ride across the lagoon every time you want to eat something. Another option is to book a pension with fridge and a kitchen where you can prepare your own meals.

BORA BORA TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKS

Pool Cocktail

Take reef shoes with you as the Bora Bora sand and ocean floor is composed of live and crushed coral. You can expect cuts and discomfort if you choose not to wear them – but don’t worry if you can’t get them before you get there, the shops will have some available. Otherwise an old pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet will do just fine.

There is no hospital on Bora Bora, just a Medical Centre in Vaitape, so it is a good idea to take a small first aid kit with you. If you do some serious damage to yourself, you can expect a ride back to Papeete where there are suitable medical services.

Nothing works in town on Sundays or Holidays. And if there is no cruise ship at the dock most local stalls in the markets are closed even during the work week. To see the full range of stalls, be sure to check them out when a cruise ship is in town.

Tipping is not compulsory, but if you appreciate the service, they will definitely appreciate any form of gratuity.

Tap water in Bora Bora is normally safe to drink, however check with your resort to confirm its current state when you get there.
