Things to do in Hawaii Honeymoon

Below our list of things to do in hawaii honeymoon with information on the main islands of Oahua and Maui.

Sunset cruise
There is nothing more relaxing then cruising about on a yacht as the sun sets over the water in Hawaii. Enjoy a few Mai Thais, some chilled tunes and the beautiful trade winds as your crew hoist the sails and keep you topped up and laughing. We enjoyed cruises with both Trilogy (Maui) and Maitai catamaran (Oahu) and highly recommend both for value and service.

Read our Maui Trilogy cruise review and Oahu Maitai cruise review.

Road to Hana
Jump on one of the daily organised tours or hire your own car to take a road trip of the picturesque Road to Hana. This 64-mile-long route contains around 600 bends and 54 bridges along its scenic drive. Along the way, check out the unique black and green sand beaches, take a dip in a waterfall or two and enjoy the cliff top lookouts.

Pearl Harbor

Most people will know Oahu for its historic war site, Pearl Harbour. This museum and memorial includes four key sites: the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Memorial and park, Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum. For more information see the official Pearl Harbor site.

Read our Pearl Harbor review for tips and tricks.

College Football

The tailgate parties before the game, the marching bands, the cheerleaders and baton twirlers, the kiss cam and of course the game itself. No trip to America is complete without taking in a football (NFL) game. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors are the local college football team and promise an action-packed afternoon at Aloha Stadium. Be sure to grab a hot dog (they sell out quick) and arrive well before the game to wander amongst the tailgate parties in the car park (an American institution in themselves), watch the marching bands warm up, chill with some live music and enjoy a beer or two before the game.

Shark snorkel

Want an adrenaline rush that is one of the more unique experiences in the world? Head into

the deep to snorkel with some of the most feared predators of the ocean. No cages, just you, a pair of flippers and your camera stands between you and the dozens of sharks swirling below. We headed out of on the pelagic shark program with One Ocean Diving. Learn about shark behaviour and conservation before entering the water

to see these amazing creatures up close and personal.
Read our Once Ocean Diving Pelagic Shark Program review.

Fishing
Full and half day fishing charters can be accessed from most habors in Hawaii, but for those chasing the big one, you can’t go past Kona on the Big Island. It’s host to Hawaii’s biggest fishing competition and a great spot to hook a big game fish such as marlin, mahi mahi, wahoo and ahi tuna.

Snorkelling
Make sure you have a snorkel and fins on your packing list (or grab one cheap at Walmart) so you can take every opportunity to see the underwater world below the surface of those azure blue waters. Paddle in straight off any beach area including the sheltered Hanauma or Turtle Bays or jump on a boat tour to places like Molokini Crater and Turtle Town.

Read our Pride of Maui Molokini and Turtle Town snorkel tour review.

Luau
A visit to one of Hawaii’s luaus for a traditional Hawaiian party and feast is a must do for most visitors to Hawaii. While many Luaus are now seen as a bit commercialised for tourists, there are still a number of good ones around and they certainly provide a fun night out. We enjoyed the Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency, Maui which features dances from islands all over Polynesia and also included a trafitional imu ceremony, an all you can eat buffet of mouth-watering food such as Kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, ahi poke and huli huli chicken, a dessert buffet and open bar with beer, wine, cocktails and juices.

Water sports

Well known as a popular surfing destination, no trip to Hawaii would be complete without grabbing a long board to hang ten as you catch some waves. Calm swells like those that are found at Waikiki are also great for some stand up paddleboarding, aqua biking or snorkelling straight off the beach. Grabbing a board or snorkel is a great way to spot turtles as you cruise around the crystal-clear waters. Boards and other gear can be hired from most hotels, but for cheaper options head to one of the many vendors along the beach strip.

Volcano tour

Turn up the heat and take a tour, trek or flight over one of Hawaii’s volcanos. With 3 active volcanos, as well as dormant ones that can be explored on foot, the island of Hawaii is one of the few places in the world where you can get up close to these natural phenomena.

Kualoa Ranch
From picturesque horse rides to adventurous ATVs and zip lining, Kualoa Ranch is an awesome day out for any visitor to Oahu. Take in the stunning mountains of the 4000-acre working ranch as you learn about the dozens of movies filmed within its valleys such as Jurassic Park and Godzilla.

Read our Kualoa Ranch ATV review and Kualoa Ranch Secret Beach review.

Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

Wander the market stalls and grab yourself an absolute bargain at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. Held at the stadium on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, this is the state’s biggest open-air flea market and features over 400 stands, selling everything from clothing to souvenirs and snacks. Entry is $1pp. Check current operation dates and times before you go in case there is a football match scheduled that week.

Shopping

Bring a spare suitcase and shop til you drop at the Waikele Premium Outlets and Ala Moana Centre. The outlets feature more than 50 brand name stores, while Ala Moana features almost 300 stores and 80 dining options. You will also find smaller outlets on the other islands and for high end fashion should check our Luxury Row on Kalakaua Ave and the duty-free prices at DFS T Galleria.

North Shore, Oahu

Hire a car and take a scenic drive to Oahu’s North Shore. You can cruise up and back in a big loop of the island in under 3 hours. On the way, be sure to check out the Dole Plantation, a historic pineapple plantation where you can enjoy Dole Whip, a delicious pineapple flavoured soft serve. Next up, stop in at the charming town of Haleiwa where you will find a relaxed harbor and street lined with boutiques, surf stores and restaurants. Take a quick tourist snap with Bob Marley or the Angel Wings while you’re there. Keep heading north to check out the famous waves at the Banzai Pipeline, before a snorkel at Turtle Bay and some famous Giovanni’s shrimp from the North Shore food trucks, before heading along the scenic east coast back to Waikiki.

Hula and Ukulele lessons
If you’re looking for some traditional cultural activities, then think about taking a hula or ukulele lesson. Most hotels will offer these, as well as other activities such as lei making, for guests staying there. You will also see ukulele lessons at many of the ukulele shops around Waikiki.

MAURITIUS TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKS

If you are planning to visit Mauritius for your honeymoon, take these tips into consideration to ensure a beautiful trip:

Saving money – Don’t book your trips and activities in advance, they are two or even three times higher when booking with a travel agent. Keep in mind that at some places prices might seem fixed, but you can negotiate. And try not to exchange your money in the hotel, you’ll get more at the airport or at the other exchange desks. The market at Flaq on the east of the island is a good place for buying souvenirs and other local things.

Mauritius monkeysFeeding the monkeys – If you’re visiting the Hindy Temple, you should bring some fruits for the monkeys. You may check if the hotel offers a lunch pack.

Escape the heat – The best time for visiting Mauritius is during March and April, when it’s not that hot, and there aren’t mosquitoes. Time to avoid is between November and February when it’s really hot. You should also plan a trip to the island’s Botanical Gardens in Pamplemousse, near Port Louis. Its trees will provide a much-needed refresh from the heat.

IS MAURITIUS SAFE?

Overall crime levels are fairly low around Mauritius however there are instances of robberies, theft and petty crime particularly around tourist areas. Downtown Port Louis is an area to avoid after dark. The indigenous inhabitants can protest against the government at times. Protests are generally peaceful however best to keep away from any demonstrations as they may turn violent. For the latest travel assessments and warnings, take a look at the Mauritius page for the US passport and International travel website for the latest travel warnings and information for Mauritius.

GETTING AROUND HAWAII

Metred taxis, Uber, private drivers and car hire are the most popular ways to get around Hawaii. Most can be obtained from your accommodation or along the streets. Private drivers are great for longer excursions and are often included or available for a small fee for activities such as snorkelling. It’s worth hiring a car for a few days if you plan to do lots of driving or have a large group as it will work our cheaper and gives you freedom. Valet parking is available at most hotels and there are a few public parking lots for a similar fee around Waikiki.

If only going a short way, consider walking or grab a bicycle to get around. There are city bikes to hire in places like Waikiki and most of the beach strip is an easy, flat walk. There is also hotel shuttles and local trolleys that run past the main areas around every hour. These are a great cheap option and allow you to see the sites along the way in a traditional way.

ACCOMMODATION IN HAWAII

Budget: Under $50pn

Mid: $50-$300pn

Luxury: $300+pn

From 5 Star luxury hotels to self-contained condos, Hawaii has plenty of accommodation options. Be aware when looking at prices that hotels will charge a resort fee (usually around $30pp per day) on top of the accommodation.

This covers things like bottles of water and use of resort facilities. It doesn’t cover extras like water sport hire, breakfast etc unless stated so be prepared to pay extra for these items.

Waikiki, Oahu – If you like the hustle and bustle, shopping, restaurants and night life then this is the place for you. A huge beach strip lined with big-name hotels and a huge range of shopping, restaurants and water sports.

North Shore, Oahu – Known for its beautiful resorts such as Turtle Bay and famous Pipeline, the North Shore provides a quieter side of Oahu where you can take in quaint fishing towns, empty beaches and lush scenery.

Lahaina, Ka’anapali and Kapalua, Maui – These three towns on Maui’s west coast are the resort hotspot of Maui and provide white, sandy strips of water fronted by plenty of hotel choices. Lahaina itself hosts the harbor where many cruises depart and is worth a look around the old fishing town’s shops and restaurants. Ka’anapali covers 3 miles of beach and includes Whaler’s Village where you can shop and eat at a number of good restaurants on the water.  Kapalua is arguably the most upmarket of the three and is set at the foot of the mountains. It too has many beautiful bays and beaches to choose from.

HAWAII TIPS AND TRICKS

Timing – To avoid paying exorbitant rates for flights and hotel, avoid travelling during the school holidays, especially Christmas and New Year’s where the price of travel can increase by up to three times.

Stick to 1 or 2 islands – It can be tempting to try to cram everything into your trip to Hawaii and there are so many islands and sites to see. Do your research and pick your top spot or two to stay and just cover those places. If you’re like many others, it won’t be your last trip to Hawaii and you will have a more enjoyable time seeing the sites between relaxing, then running around from dawn to dusk trying to see everything.

Don’t book too much in advance – From the moment you arrive in Hawaii at the airport, you will see stands with dozens of brochures to cover sites and activities of every sort. There are also vendors along the streets and beaches selling activities and you will find that for many it’s cheaper to book once you get there and you may even be able to haggle a deal. Some of the cruises offer cheap last-minute seats as they are boarding people and there is so much competition that it’s easy to get a discount by shopping around. We travelled in September holidays and had a few things booked that we knew would sell out but found we waited to book other things including Pearl Harbour the night before so we could check the weather and how we were feeling.

I hope this Hawaii Honeymoon Guide helps you have a great time!!

Santorini Honeymoon Guide

santorini oia

Not far from the southeastern Greece’s mainland, lies a small, circular archipelago. This small group of islands is still an active volcano and possibly the only volcano in the world with its crater beneath the surface of the sea. The archipelago has the same name as its largest island – Santorini (or Thíra). This group of islands consists of Thíra, Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea and Nea Kaméni, and it is one of the most favored places for a romantic holiday in Greece.

WHY HONEYMOON IN SANTORINI

Where else can you stay on the rim of an active volcano in the middle of the sea, surrounded by crystal clear waters? It is also popular as a wedding destination among couples who still have not tied the knot. Couples from all over the world dream about a long walk beneath Santorini’s romantic sunset, with a magnificent view of the island’s famous caldera. There is an old saying – ‘Santorini has more churches than houses and more wine than water.’

HOW TO GET TO SANTORINI

santorini DonkeyWhile some European operators offer direct flights to Santorini (primarily in the UK), a reliable option is to fly into Athens where there are daily flights that link through to Santorini. Be aware if you choose to try and track direct from another European country, accessibility of those flights can be seasonal.

Alternatively when you get to Athens, take a taxi or Bus to the Port of Pireaus where you can get a normal or high speed ferry for 25 to 40 Euro to Santorini.

You may even find yourself taking a donkey to help get you up the hill once you arrive!!

Each windmill can accommodate up to five people, but you might want to come here for a romantic getaway with your loved one.

Santorini WineTake a wine or brewing tour – Many wine tours allow you to sample some wine for just a few euros, or, sometimes, even completely free. The most famous wineries on the island are Santo Wines and Volcan Wines. You should also visit the only real local microbrewery, Santorini Brewing Company. You will recognize it by its donkey logo. These ‘Donkey’ beers are unfiltered and unpasteurized, so they must be stored and served cold.

santorini restaurantHave a romantic dinner – Many restaurants in Santorini overlook the magnificent caldera. One of the most romantic things you can try is having a candlelit dinner in the sunset.

Take a hiking tour from Fira to Oia – This is a three-hour hiking tour, which offers astonishing views. Follow an ancient trail that connects these two places, and enjoy every step you take. Best time for hiking is spring.

Try frozen yogurt for dinner – When you come to Greece, you must try frozen Greek yogurt. Chill out at Chillbox, you will not regret it. This tasty frozen dessert has low calories and low fat, and it is made from 100% fresh Greek low-fat milk, without any preservatives.

Practice yoga while enjoying the view of Fira – Upon request, yoga classes are available at Caveland Santorini terrace. There is nothing more relaxing than practicing yoga while watching the Aegean Sea, as well as Fira or Karterados.

STAYING FOR LONGER?

The amount of time you will spend in Santorini depends on the time of the year you are visiting the island and on the number of things that you would like to do and visit. You should not spend less than five days, but there is also no need to spend more than ten days on the island.

Consider spending time travelling to other parts of Greece honeymoon hot spots while you are in the area!!

SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR HONEYMOON NIGHT 1

Ifestia Festival – This now wide-known and highly visited festival started entirely by accident. In 1991, during a musical concert, visitors were so thrilled with the firework, that the organizers decided to repeat it next year. Great music accompanies the firework explosions that recreate the volcanic eruptions. The festival was held in August, but it is moved to September, to prolong the touristic season.

Santorini

International Music Festival – Every year in September, since 1979, The International Music Festival welcomes famous artists from all over the world. For two weeks, they perform at the Nomikos Conference Centre in Fira. The organizer of this festival is a famous pianist Athena Capodistria, director and founder of ‘The Friends of Santorini Cultural Association.’

Easter – Greek Orthodox Church uses the ancient Julian calendar, instead of the Gregorian calendar. Easter is not just the holiest of all Greek holidays, but also a celebration of spring. Since most Greeks tend to spend this holiday in the countryside, Santorini is a popular destination for everyone who wants to spend a traditional Easter, with lots of tasty food and exceptional wines. SANTORINI TRAVEL TIPS AND TRICKS

If you are planning to visit Santorini for your honeymoon, take these tips into consideration to ensure a beautiful trip:

Choose your ferry – You can choose between two types of ferries – the fast or the slow ones. If you choose one of the fast ferries (Hellenic Seaways or SeaJets), you will need about 4-5 hours to get to Santorini. But, if you take a slow ferry (Anek Lines or Blue Star Ferries), you will need about 8-9 hours. Slow ferries are more comfortable than the fast ones.

Climbing up – The ferry will get you at the bottom of the cliff. To get up, you will have to take the cable car, to walk up the 586 stairs, or to ride a donkey. The most convenient option is cable car, but, if it is windy, it will be closed, and it might get a little too crowded during the summer months.

santorini alleysTraveling around Santorini – The most convenient way to go from town to town is by KTEL public bus. It is cheap and environment-friendly. And if you want to go off the beaten track, you should rent an ATV (a four-wheel bicycle) or a scooter. A standard driver’s license from any country will be enough.

IS SANTORINI SAFE?

Santorini is considered a safe destination with minimal criminal activity. Narrow streets and drunk drivers can pose a safety hazard so be sure to stay safe on the roads and don’t drive after a visit to the wineries. For the latest travel assessments and warnings, take a look at the Greece page for the US passport and International travel website for the latest travel warnings and information for Greece – some of which apply to Santorini.

Bora Bora Honeymoon

Bora Bora Honeymoon

Bora Bora Bungalow Sunset

A Bora Bora Honeymoon has become one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world. Located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean lies the island with turquoise lagoons and beaches covered with white sand. You will soon realize why so many newlywed couples dream about spending their honeymoon there. Bora Bora is one of top honeymoon destinations, but not many couples actually manage to come there and the exclusivity is what makes it even more special!

All the luxurious resorts and private overwater bungalows will make you feel like you are in a paradise. You can either choose a ‘readyto-go’ honeymoon package, or you can tailor your own. And if you still have not tied the knot, you can do it here. Choose one of the two ceremony styles (Polynesian Traditional ceremony or Western ceremony) and say ‘I do’ in one of many romantic Bora Bora resorts or in a romantic chapel on top of the hill. Just imagine an intimate wedding in the sunset, with a magnificent view…

WHY GO TO BORA BORA FOR MY HONEYMOON

The pictures really do tell the story of this tropical paradise. If you are looking for a quiet, private and romantic location to spend with your partner, Bora Bora offers a place to enjoy each other’s company with crystal clear blue water and overwater bungalows sure not to disappoint.

With average sea temperatures that don’t get below about 27oC (81oF), the climate is truly available all year round to enjoy.

HOW TO GET TO THERE

Bora Bora is a group of islands with the main island surrounded by a lagoon and a series of smaller islands. The island group is about 1 hour flight time Northwest from Papeete in Tahiti which has direct flights from many destinations. Once at Faa’a airport in Papeete, catch a connection to the airfield. Be sure to have your camera ready for arrival into the island – The dormant volcano on the main island with the surrounding lagoons and islands make for a great photo. If you get in the line up early enough, try and sit on the left side of the plane for the arrival for the best photos and views.

Bora Bora Airport

The airport is on a separate island from Vaitape so you can expect a boat transfer upon arrival to one of the resorts. If you are flying with Air Tahiti, you may have a shuttle boat to Vaitape included in your airfare. Your resort may also offer boat airport transfers so be sure to see what transfer services they have available.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive experience, you can also book an all-inclusive cruise through Tahiti. Choose between Paul Gauguin and Crystal cruises, and enjoy sailing into the most beautiful lagoons in the Pacific Ocean.

ADULT ONLY RESORTS

People who do not have their own children or choose the island as their honeymoon destination usually look for adults only accommodation. Unfortunately, there are not any available. Though there are not many children, as well. To lower the possibility of spending your holiday with someone else’s kids, choose the time of your vacation wisely.

Families usually travel during the school breaks – from June to August or in December and January. Another option is to choose a resort that is reserved exclusively for adults and children over the age of twelve (The Sofitel Private Island Resort) or a resort with an adults-only pool (The St. Regis Resort).

LOCAL FOOD

Grilled FIshOnce you get to this island, be sure to enjoy the fresh local Polynesian food. The fish here is amazing (choose ocean fish, instead of lagoon fish). And you have to try poisson cru – a delicious dish of tuna marinated in lime and coconut. When it comes to eating out, you can either visit local grocery stores and buy some snacks, or you can visit one of the cafes and restaurants. But, whatever you choose, try not to miss ‘roulottes’ – rolling food trucks which serve grilled fish and fries, as well as kebabs and barbecued meat. These food trucks are a Tahitian tradition.

It would be a good idea to choose resorts with breakfast and dinner included, so you do not have to take a boat ride across the lagoon every time you want to eat something. Another option is to book a pension with fridge and a kitchen where you can prepare your own meals.

Take reef shoes with you as the Bora Bora sand and ocean floor is composed of live and crushed coral. You can expect cuts and discomfort if you choose not to wear them – but don’t worry if you can’t get them before you get there, the shops will have some available. Otherwise an old pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet will do just fine.

There is no hospital on Bora Bora, just a Medical Centre in Vaitape, so it is a good idea to take a small first aid kit with you. If you do some serious damage to yourself, you can expect a ride back to Papeete where there are suitable medical services.

Nothing works in town on Sundays or Holidays. And if there is no cruise ship at the dock most local stalls in the markets are closed even during the work week. To see the full range of stalls, be sure to check them out when a cruise ship is in town.

Tipping is not compulsory, but if you appreciate the service, they will definitely appreciate any form of gratuity.

Tap water in Bora Bora is normally safe to drink, however check with your resort to confirm its current state when you get there.

Bali Honeymoon Guide

Bali Honeymoon Guide

Bali local

From its idyllic island beaches to lush tropical rainforests in the hills, Bali is a tropical paradise that has something for everyone. But by far the biggest draw card to this Indonesian destination is the beautiful Balinese people.

First travelling to Bali in 2011, I immediately understood what keeps drawing the same visitors back year after year. It had all of the things I loved most about South East Asian travel such as the humidity, cheap, authentic Asian food and markets on every corner. Bali, however, had one thing that no other place in Asia had ever had – The friendliest people in the world.

With their cheeky grins they would shout out phrases in the accent of whatever country you were from, trying to get you to buy their wares, eat at their stall or hire them for a day of driving. But what was different was the seemingly genuine nature of these hard working people. Unlike other countries I had been to, they didn’t seem intent on scamming you by taking you to their cousins opal shop or giving you change in a different currency.

So if you’re after a honeymoon to South East Asia where the smiles are abundant, make sure to add Bali to the top of your list.

WHY GO TO BALI?

Friendly people, beautiful islands, cheap food and drink, snorkelling and diving, temples, cheap shopping.

WHAT TO DO IN BALI?

Tanah Lot Temple BaliTanah Lot Temple – Arrive in the afternoon to capture this amazing Hindu temple silhouetted against the sunset. One of Bali’s most important landmarks, Pura Tanah Lot is perched on a rock, surrounded by water at high tide. At low tide, you can walk across to the temple itself and experience it up close.

*Insider tip – For uninterrupted views of the temple without the crowds, head up the hill to one of the many restaurants and grab a cliff side seat to watch the sun set whilst you sip on a cocktail or two.

Uluwatu Temple – Perched on a cliff about 70 metres above sea level, Pura Uluwatu is among Bali’s most important sea temples and provides another stunning spot to capture a Bali sunset. A Kecak dance is performed between 6-7pm everyday at the nearby clifftop stage. Visitors can watch for a small fee as the sunsets in the background.Bali Rice fields

Besakih Temple – known as “Mother Temple”, this is the largest of Bali’s temples. It features three temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity. Visit in the early morning as it becomes very busy in the day time. Official guides are available for a fee but are not mandatory to enter the temple.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces – These rice terraces, north of Ubud, are popular with artists and tourists alike for their scenic expanses. A great place to stop for a village lunch while you take in the breathtaking views of the rice fields.

Bali monkey

Sacred Monkey Forest – situated in Ubud, the Sacred Monkey Forest is home to 300 long-tailed macaques. These cheeky inhabitants can be seen swinging through the canopies as you walk along the paved pathways of the forest and temples within. Beware any lose jewellery or apparel or you may find monkeys grabbing at you as they look for a banana or two.

Kintamani Volcano – At Mount Batur you will come across the imposing Kintamani Volcano. Hiking up Mount Batur takes approximately 3 hours or more and is best to do with an organised guide. Penelokan is a great place to stop and take it all in, offering sweeping views over the volcano at the southernmost point of the crater rim.

Goa Gajah – ‘Elephant Cave’ sees you walking through the mouth of a demon to explore this Hindu site. As you descend the stairs from the carpark you will come across a peaceful courtyard, rock-wall carvings, as well as bathing pools and fountains.

Nusa Lembongan – If you enjoy water sports and islands, take a day cruise or spend a few nights on Nusa Lembongan island. Daily cruises depart from Benoa Harbour and moor for the day alongside their own pontoons, offering banana boat rides, snorkelling, scuba diving and water slides. Many also offer the opportunity for a cultural walking tour of Nusa Lembongan itself. Enjoy a coconut from the locals as you take in some of the bluest waters you will ever see.

Kuta – No trip to Bali is complete without checking out the hustle and bustle of Kuta and the famed Poppies Lane and Legian Road. From bartering for a cheapBali dolphins shopping deal to grabbing a bite to eat in one of the many pubs and clubs, these streets of Kuta are a fun experience not to be missed. Don’t forget to take a stroll on the beach, maybe hire a cheap surf board or just enjoy a cool drink under the palm trees

Lovina – Up in the north you will find Lovina with its black volcanic sand beaches, calm diving waters and abundance of dolphins. Watch the prahu (traditional outrigger canoes) go out for fishing in the evenings, enjoy trekking to waterfalls and catch your own dinner on a reef or deep sea fishing trip.

STAYING FOR LONGER – CHECK OUT….

We’ve already mentioned Nusa Lembongan, but if you have a couple of days to spare and want to really get away from it all, check out the divine Gili Islands. Fringed by palms, turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, these islands are a remote paradise, easily reached via speedboat.

Gili Meno and Gili Air – With pure white sands, aquamarine water and a turtle sanctuary, Gili Meno is a good pick for natures lovers. It is the most isolated of the islands, so is perfect for those wanting to remove themselves from the world. Gili Air is another great honeymoon hideaway, with an abundance or beautiful marine life and coral. Both islands prohibit the use of motorised vehicles, so take a romantic bike ride or even better a horse drawn carriage to get around.

Bali boat

Gili Gede – still somewhat undiscovered, Gili Gede is a snorkelers paradise with 12 other islands to explore in this mini-archipelago. And because it’s not yet well known on the tourist scene, the reefs are still in pristine condition.

Gili Trawangan – known as a backpacker haven, this island has a mischievous feel with its lack of police and full moon parties. Unlike Hindu Bali, Gili T is governed by Muslim religion and you will hear the mystical call to prayer five times daily. During the day, spend time cycling the whole island, which can be done in less than an hour and submerge yourself in some of the clearest waters you will ever see.

SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR HONEYMOON NIGHT 1

Head to Jimbaran Bay for a romantic sunset dinner on the beach. Once a quiet seaside fishing town, Jimbaran is now known for its dozens of seafood restaurants that line the shore. Feel the sand beneath your feet, watch the sun set and enjoy traditional dancing as you chow down on all the seafood you can imagine. Seafood is paid for by the kilo, so pick out which particular crab, fish or prawns you want from the tanks and they will be weighed and added to your bill.

GETTING THERE

FESTIVALS IN BALI

Nyepi – Around March

A day of silence marks the third day of Bali New Year celebrations. On this day there is no activity anywhere, no cars on the road, no celebrations, no flights in or out of Bali and no lights. Nyepi Eve is the total opposite with locals lighting fire torches and parading giant effigies called ogoh-ogoh up to 25 feet tall through the streets. Nyepi falls on the day after the new moon on the ninth month.Bali festival

Rice Harvest Festival – May to June

To mark the end of Bali’s harvest season, visitors and locals celebrate with traditional cuisine cooked in honour of Dewi Sri, the Rice God. Part of the celebrations include the Negara Bull Races, a Balinese tradition held in Perancak at the end of the festival. Water buffaloes are decorated with ornate and colourful headdresses to compete in races. The Rice Harvest Festival is held in May in various locations around Bali.

Galungan – July

Galungan is a religious feast and festival to celebrate the legendary battle of virtue (Dharma) versus evil (Adharma). Watch as Barong dancers move from temple to temple during this ten-day celebration. The Balinese dress in their finest clothes and jewels and believe during this time all Balinese gods will descend to earth. Locals place tall bamboo poles called ‘penjor’ to the right side of their front door and decorate it with cakes, fruits, flowers and leaves. The festival concludes with the Kuningan, where locals make offerings and prayers at temples and family shrines.

GETTING AROUND BALI

Metred taxis and private drivers are the two most popular ways to get around Bali. Both can be obtained from your accommodation or along the streets. In fact, you will hardly leave your room before you hear the locals calling out “transport” to you. If catching cabs, ensure they turn the metre on before starting, have small change ready to pay and use reputable companies like Bluebird to avoid getting scammed. With a private driver, agree on the price for the trip beforehand. These are great for longer trips such as whole day excursions.

If only going a short way, consider walking or grab a bicycle to get around. Another option is to hire a bike or scooter, but be aware that you need to have the right insurance, and should always wear a helmet and protective clothing. Motorbike accidents are one of the leading causes of injury to tourists.

    • Mie Goreng – Traditional fried noodles, usually accompanied by chicken, pork or shrimp and served with fried egg on top.

    • Nasi Goreng – Another popular Indonesian staple, the Balinese eat this fried rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mixed with meats and vegetables, as Bali Sataywell as scrambled eggs and sauces, ranging from sweet soy to kecap manis and chilli.

    • Sate – The Balinese version of satays, usually chicken but sometimes fish or other grilled meats. After blending with an array of spices, the meat is wrapped around bamboo, sugar cane or lemongrass skewers before grilling. Can be served with or without peanut sauce.

    • Babi Guling – Also known as suckling Pig, Bali’s most famed dish is rubbed with turmeric, then stuffed with a “base gede,” or spice paste of coriander, lime, lemongrass, chilli, pepper, shallots, ginger, garlic and salam leaves. The pig is roasted over wood or coconut husks before being served from head to toe. Traditionally a communal meal used in festivals and ceremonies, babi guling can now be found across the island in restaurants and roadside stalls.

    • Nasi Campur – Nasi ayam or campur is the local version of mixed rice. There is no set combination of flavours so it’s rare to get the same dish twice. The dish is mainly white rice served with meats, along with mixed vegetables and a dash of spicy sambal. For those who don’t like spice, simply ask for it without the sambal.

    • Bebek betutu (slow cooked duck) – Another traditional ceremonial dish, bebek betutu consists of a whole duck stuffed with traditional spices, then wrapped in banana leaves or betel nut husks, before it’s baked in a coal fire for hours until the meat falls off the bone.

    • Jimbaran Seafood – Take your pick at the dozens of beachfront restaurants lining Jimbaran Bay to enjoy a feast of fresh caught seafood. Each restaurant has its own recipe of sauces and condiments, resulting in a different experience at each. Pick your seafood from the tanks and baskets and watch as they weigh and cook it in front of you.

LANGUAGE IN BALI

Most Balinese are bilingual if not trilingual, speaking Indonesian, Balinese and English. English is the most popular foreign language due to high levels of Australian tourism. You will have no problems with English in hotels and most restaurants, and most menus are at least bilingual. If you are Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Russian you can ask for a menu in your language and might get lucky at restaurants in Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua and Seminyak.

BALI TIPS AND TRICKS

balinese offering

Offerings – You will see the beautifully crafted Balinese offerings lining the footpaths outside their homes, family shrines and shops. These small, square, woven baskets can be as little as a few grains of rice stuck to a banana leave or as lavish as cake, fruit, flowers, gifts and money, with a single stick of incense burning to carry the offers to heaven. The items inside all have special meaning, representing various Hindu gods, as well as sincerity and love. Be careful not to walk over or kick the offerings while they are still burning.

Dress – When entering temples, it is important to be wearing the appropriate attire such as sleeved shirt, sarong etc. You can bring your own with you or usually borrow these for free/small fee outside each temple you visit. Sarongs are also readily available for purchase at the stalls outside most temples.

Carry toilet paper – If your used to the luxury of using toilet paper when you use the bathroom, ensure to carry some sheets or a small pack of tissues around with you, as it will rarely be available in public toilets.
